Get Your Home Ready for Fall

Summer always seems to fly by, and before you know it, cooler temperatures, falling leaves, and fall storms are knocking at the door. Spending a little time on home maintenance now can help you avoid bigger headaches later—and may even save you money on repairs and energy bills.

Start with Your Roof and Gutters

Your roof takes a beating year-round, so it's a good idea to give it a quick inspection before fall weather sets in. Look for missing or damaged shingles, signs of wear, or anything that doesn't look quite right. Catching a small problem now is almost always cheaper than dealing with a leak later.

While you're up there—or hiring someone who is—don't forget the gutters. Leaves, sticks, and other debris can clog them up, causing water to spill over and potentially damage your roof, siding, foundation, or landscaping. Clean gutters help move water away from your home where it belongs.

Keep the Warm Air In

As temperatures cool down, check around your windows and doors for drafts. Replacing worn weather stripping or adding a little caulk around gaps is an inexpensive way to make your home more comfortable and help lower your heating bill.

It's also a smart time to have your furnace or HVAC system serviced before you need it every day. A little preventative maintenance can go a long way toward avoiding a breakdown on the first freezing night of the season.

Don't Forget the Yard

Fall storms can bring strong winds, so take a walk around your property and look for dead or overhanging tree branches—especially those hanging over your house, garage, or driveway. Trimming them back now can help reduce the chance of costly damage later.

Outdoor furniture, grills, flower pots, and other loose items should also be secured or stored when they're not being used. It only takes one windy day for those items to become projectiles.

Take a Fresh Look at Your Insurance

Fall is also a great time to review your homeowners insurance.

Have you remodeled your kitchen? Finished your basement? Added a new deck or outbuilding? Purchased a piece of jewelry, a zero-turn mower, or other valuable items?

Life changes, and your insurance should keep up with those changes. A quick policy review can help make sure your home and belongings are properly protected and that you understand your deductibles and coverage before you ever need to file a claim.

A Little Maintenance Today Can Save You Tomorrow

Getting your home ready for fall doesn't have to be overwhelming. A few simple maintenance projects now can help protect your home from seasonal weather, improve energy efficiency, and give you peace of mind heading into the colder months.

And while you're checking things off your fall to-do list, consider giving your homeowners insurance a quick review, too. We're always happy to answer questions, explain your coverage, and make sure your policy still fits your needs.
